Greek Life

Joining a fraternity or sorority is a lifetime commitment - a commitment that will benefit you now and in the future. The friendships and skills you build when you join a Greek organization are forged and built to last a lifetime. Our Greek community has so much to offer you. It's comprised of chapters that are individually unique, but together, they are a complete and united community.

Hazing in any form is prohibited at the Cheyney University of Pennsylvania.

Greek Life COMING EVENTS

As you explore the opportunities available to you at Cheyney University, consider whether Greek Life is right for you. Our Greek organizations are comprised of groups of individuals with various interests. They are bonded together by common goals and aspirations. Leadership, scholarship, community service, and brotherhood/sisterhood are the pillars of each of our organizations. By focusing on these four ideals, one can expect both a positive collegiate and Greek experience

Basic Expectations of Greek Life

  • Engaging students in values-based decision making and programming consistent with the four pillars of Greek life:

1) Academic Excellence

2) Leadership Development

3) Community Service

4) Brotherhood/Sisterhood

  • To know and understand the ideals expressed in my fraternity/sorority ritual and will strive to incorporate them in my daily life. To strive for academic achievement and practice academic integrity.

  • To respect the dignity of all persons; therefore, I will not physically, mentally, psychologically, or sexually abuse or haze any human being.

  • To protect the health and safety of all human beings.

  • To respect my property and the property of others; therefore, I will neither abuse nor tolerate the abuse of property.

  • To meet my financial obligations in a timely manner.

  • To neither use nor support the use of illegal drugs; I will neither misuse nor support the misuse of alcohol.

  • To acknowledge that a clean and attractive environment is essential to both physical and mental health; therefore, I will do all in my power to see that the chapter property is properly cleaned and maintained.

  • To challenge all my fraternity/sorority members to abide by these expectations and will confront those who violate them.

Hazing, as defined by the Pennsylvania Hazing Law, is ―Any action or situation which recklessly or intentionally endangers the mental or physical health or safety of a student or which willfully destroys or removes public property for the purpose of initiation or admission into or affiliation with, or as a condition for continued membership in, any organization operating under the sanction of, or recognized as, an organization by an institution of higher education. The term shall include, but not be limited to, any brutality of a physical nature, such as whipping, beating, branding, forced calisthenics, exposure to the elements, forced consumption of any food, liquor, drug, or other substance, or any other forced physical activity which could adversely affect the physical health and safety of the individual, and shall include any activity which would subject the individual to extreme mental stress, such as sleep deprivation, forced exclusion from social contact, forced conduct which could result in extreme embarrassment, or any other forced activity which could adversely affect the mental health or dignity of the individual, or any willful destruction or removal of public property. …Any activity…upon which the initiation or admission into or affiliation with or continued membership in an organization is directly or indirectly conditioned shall be presumed to be ―forced activity, the willingness of an individual to participate in such activity notwithstanding.
